Daihatsu Hijet

The Daihatsu Hijet Mini Truck has a 3 cylinder water cooled engine mounted under the front seat. The engine and transmission are mounted down low in the frame. This gives the Hijet truck a low center of gravity and helps with turning around in a small area. The Japanese Mini Trucks have become quite popular in North America. They have small engines with only 660cc and do not consume much fuel. The Daihatsu 4x4 mini truck is capable of traveling many places that you would not dare in a full size pick up truck or even an ATV. Daihatsu Hijet Parts are available through our on line store to make it easy for customers to get the parts that they need with out having to wait a long time.

Accessories & Service Manuals

The Daihatsu Hijet English service manual is a must for your little mini truck. The service manual contains information that will help if you need to adjust the carburetor or change the clutch on the Daihatsu Hijet. There is a wireing diagram and pictures of the brakes and steering and suspension parts. The fuel system is laid out and it will be easy to cahnge the fuel pump or a tie rod end. The windshield can be changed with out the need to attend a glass shop as it is held in place by arubber seal that can be reused. The Daihatsu Hi-jet mini truck was also sold in the USA as a left hand drive truck and there are many of these mini trucks still being used today.

Axles & Shafts

The Daihatsu hijet has two front CV axles and a rear drive shaft that is fitted to the rear of the transmission and connects to the rear differential driving the two rear axles on the rear end. There is a front Drive shaft fitted to the transfer case and connected to the front differential that drives the right front CV axle and left front CV axle. The rear drive shaft on the Daihatsu Hijet mini truck  is very short and you may need to have the U joints inspected. The front drive shaft is much longer, it is advisable to have the front U jopints inspected as well. The Left front CV axle or CV shaft is prone to have the out board CV joint wear. This is very common with Daihatsu Hijet mini trcuks that have a lift kit installed.

Belts & Hoses

If the timing belt was to break on the Daihatsu Hijet engine there is a chance that one or more engine valves could bend. It is a good idea to change the timing belt and tensioner if you do not know if the previous owner had done so. It is low cost insurance and preventative maintanence for the engine of your Daihatsu Hijet mini truck to change the timing belt and tensioner. The rubber goes hard over time and starts to crack. The timing belt becomes harder and can break at any time with age. Changing the timing belt and tensioner is a must if you need a water pump replacement.

Brakes

The front brake pads usually wear out much faster then the rear brake shoes. The Daihatsu Hijet mini truck is no different than any other pick up truck. The front and rear brakes should be checked for wear, and replaced if the pad or shoe material in thin. It is very common for the rear wheel cylinder cups to wear and leak brake fluid to the rear brake shoes. Simply lift the corner of one of the rear wheel cylinder dust covers and see if fluid is visible. A rear wheel cylinder repair kit can solve this issue. If your Daihatsu Hijet pulls to one side when braking, it is possible that one of the front brake calipers is sticking. This can be corrected with the installation of a front brake caliper repair kit.

Cables

There are a number of cables on a Daihatsu Hijet one of which controls the throttle allowing the engine to increase and decrease acceleration. The Clutch cable pulls the Clutch plate allowing the clutch disc to spin on its own so that the Daihatsu Hijet mini truck does not move when the truck is parked with the engine running. There are two shift cables. One that allows forward and rear movement of the shifter for switching from first to second gears. The second shift cable is called the side to side shift cable. This cable allows the shifter to move from left to right so that the forward/reverse cable can operate the third to fourth gears and the reverse gear. The Speedometer cable tranfers the speed inside the transmission to the speedometer on the dash.

Cooling & Fuel

The Cooling system on a Daihatsu Hijet comprises of a Water Pump, Thermostat and a Radiator and Heater Core. The Fuel system starts at the Fuel Tank and flows up to the Fuel Pump before the fuel can enter the carburetor. The needle valve inside the carburetor on a Daihatsu Hijet mini truck has been known to stick inside the seat. The truck may not start with fuel running out of the air breather by the air filter or the fuel could be completely cut off. The Daihatsu Hijet Carburetor repair kit can fix this. If the Daihatsu Hijet is left sitting for a long period of time the fuel pump diaphram can dry up and crack. The fuel pump may not have enough strength to suck the fuel from the gas tank and pump it to the carburetor.

Engine

There are many components in the Daihatsu Hijet engine. The engine valves are what lets the fuel travel from the carburetor to the combustion chamber. The Intake Valve lets fuel in, and the Exhaust Valve lets the burnt fuel or exhaust leave the combustion chamber. The pistons have piston rings fitted to allow the engine to build compression. When a Daihatsu Hijet mini truck is run with out an air filter it will suck in dust that causes extreme wear of the piston rings and thins the engine rod bearings and engine main bearings. If this happens the engine needs a rebuild kit to restore the compression and allow the small 660cc mini truck engine to perform at its best.

Filters

There are three main filters in a Daihatsu Hijet, The Air Filter allowing particles to be separated from clean air. The Fuel filter separates dirt particles in the fuel from entering the carburetor. The Oil Filter separates particles from the oil. Clean oil maintains the life of the Daihatsu Hijet Engine. The Clean fuel maximises the life of the carburetor allowing clean fuel to enter the engine. Clean air allows the engine to run smooth and last longer. The Daihatsu Hijet will perform at its best with clean air, fuel and oil. Filters should be changed on a regular basis. This enhances peformance and fuel economy.

Gaskets

The Gaskets are like the mortar holding bricks on a building. The Engine Gaskets on a Daihatsu Hijet are what holds the parts of the engine together sealing the internals to keep engine compression so the engine can function at it peek performance. The Intake gasket holds the intake manifold to the cylinder head. The exhaust gasket holds the Exhaust manifold to the cylinder head. The valve cover gasket  or Rocker Cover Gasket holds the cover to the cylinder head and keeps the engine oil inside the engine. The cylinder head gasket holds the engine cylinder head to the engine block keeping compression up.

Glass & Mirrors

The front Windshield of a Daihatsu Hijet mini truck is made of laminated glass. This glass has a layer of plastic between two layers of glass. This gives protection to the driver and passenger. The Door Glass is Saftey glass and the rear glass is also saftey glass. When this type of glass breaks it shatters into small squares. The door mirrors on a Daihatsu Hijet are adjustable from right to left and slightly up and down. Sorry no power options. Japanese mini trucks are light, inexpensive and economical. That is why no power windows and no power mirrors.

Lift Kit

These days there are so many uses for a Japanese Mini Truck and the Daihatsu Hijet is no exception. The Daihatsu Hijet is a popular truck for owners to add a 2"lift kit. We have discovered that installing a lift kit to a mini truck with a greater height than 2" will cause wear to the front CV axle shaft. Particularly the left front CV axle, as it has the shorter length. The lift kit that we sell has camber adjustment. This means that the top of the strut can be adjusted so that the top of the tire is not tilted out so much after the lift kit is installed. If a standard lift kit is installed with no adjustment to the camber then the front tires will wear out very fast.

Lights

The Daihatsu Hijet has front signal lites, front corner lites, head lites and taillites. We stock many used lites for the Hi-jet mini truck. The rear taillite lenses are a very popular item. Front headlites should be turned on on the afternoon, there has been studies showing that daytime headlites reduce traffic accidents. It is aways a good idea to check your brake lites perodically to make sure that they function correctly. This helps reduce rear end collision.

Mounts

There are two engine mounts on the Daihatsu Hijet. One engine mount on the right side and one engine mount on the left side. There is a transmission mount located at the rear of the transmission on the Daihatsu Hijet. These mounts can get hard and crack or even split causing a banging noise when accelerating. All of the rubber mounts should be checked for wear including the body mount and differential mount.

Pumps

The fuel pump on the early Daihatsu hijet had a diaphram that was replaceable. The newer fuel pump is a complete unit that does not even come apart. There are two types of fuel pumps. The first is mounted on the cylinder head of the Daihatsu Hijet and is driven by a pin that pushes the diaphram by the movement of the cam shaft. The second type of fuel pump is an electric fuel pump that is mounted inside the fuel tank. The water pump is mounted to the engine block and driven by the alternator belt. The Daihatsu S80 and S81 water pump look almost exactly the same as the Water Pump on the S82 and S83 Model. The S82 and S83 water pump has a larger diameter outlet for the radiator hose to connect and the neck of the shaft that the pulley mounts to is slightly longer.

Seals

There are various seals on the engine of a Daihatsu Hijet. The Cam Seal mounts on the front of the cam shaft. The Valve Stem seals are mounted on the valve guide and stop oil from running down the valve and into the combustion chamber, The front and rear crank seal stop oil from escaping the crank case and out of the engine. The differential seals keep the gear oil inside the differential. The Pion seal and axle seal keep the oil inside the read essembly of the Daihatsu Hijet mini truck. There are seals on the front drive train that keep dust and dirt out of the front wheel bearings.

Snow Plows

A snow plow can be mounted to the front of a Daihatsu Hijet mini truck. A front receive hitch is required in order to mount a removable snow plow system to the front of the Hijet mini truck. We recomend the installation of heavy front coil springs when mounting a snow plow to a mini truck. Many customers choose to install 13" Alloys wheels with Ice radial tires and a lift kit for added clearance for the snow plow. snow plows can be manual or controled by a winch. The winch is prefered as the plow can then be control from inside the cab.
